When you have a two or three year old about to start school for the first time, the first thing you worry about is separation anxiety. The first thing your toddler worries about is whether he or she will have a cool backpack like the older kids. Here's a roundup of a few of the latest and a few of the tried and tested backpacks made especially for little kids. The keyword here is SMALL. Make sure to look for lightweight and small in size and stay away from regular children's backpacks.

I know it's still summer and you probably don't want to hear about what's going to be in stores in the Fall. Unfortunately, we at the magazine already started seeing racks and racks of Fall sweaters, trenchcoats and leather jackets, all collected for upcoming photo shoots. We'll be saving most of these designer duds for August and September issues. However, there's one collection I need to highlight now and possibly when the time comes in September.

All for Children is a joint project with UNICEF, a five year initiative started by H&M, which aims to get children out of work and into schools. More information is available on the project web site. What you can do to support their efforts is purchasing from the All for Children collections being sold at H&M's worldwide and online. The news is out: not all sunscreens for baby are safe to use. With strong chemicals used in most sunscreens today, the health concern is not necessarily immediate. This summer we'll be sporting a pair of Jack Rogers each, most likely not matching since she will refuse to wear the gold sandals I will want to pick out for her. Most likely she'll go for a nautical inspired one like this and that'll be OK. After all I'm channelling Palm Beach, wishing we could be back in Florida this summer, and she, the Bosphorus, completely at peace with where she is. Alternative Flower Girl Dresses for Trendy Girls

Today a princess will be made. When Prince William and Kate Middleton get married, I'm sure there will be as many little girls watching as adults. If we were to attend (coincidentally we do have to go to a cousin's wedding tomorrow), I'd be hard pressed to get my daughter into a classic flower girl dress: No frilly Miss Grants, I Pinco Pallinos or check dresses from Burberry for us."I have a sporty style moooom!" she says and that's the end of it. However, I might be able to convince her to wear a dress.

If I can, then it will have to be an alternative look for us. She doesn't like looking like everybody else. Bring us a Junior Gaultier, a Little Marc Jacobs or believe it or not a Roberto Cavalli and THEN maybe she'll wear the pretty sandals and the fancy hat I want her to wear.

Designer Duds Stole My Heart

I have a confession to make: I'm in love. I'm in love with little things form Marc Jacobs, Phillip Lim, Stella McCartney, Marni and Armani. I'm lusting after designer duds. What's new! Unfortunately these designs don't come in my size. The largest size they have is for 12 year olds, and that just won't fit.

With more and more high-end designers entering the children's fashion business, we can't help but notice some of them are actually doing it quite well. Take the Little Marc Jacobs brand for example. Highly popular in Europe already, the line features more than just smaller versions of popular MJ prints and styles. This line is very well thought out and is available in a variety of department stores and online boutiques at prices that are not totally unreasonable. Well at least for MJ lovers.

Our latest favorite of online havens for mini designer outfits is Kids of Luxury. Although of Danish origin, this extensive fashion boutique has a wide range of designers from all around the world and will ship goods worldwide. I meant to tell you about JJ Cole's new diaper bag & pattern Lemon Posy. After all lemons were all over the runways for the Spring/Summer 2011 collections, including kids, and the lemon-print will definitely be a hot trend for the upcoming months. The JJ Cole Bundle Me has been a favorite for many years, so I knew the PVC-free laminated canvas bags they came up with would be absolutely the best must have for this season.

Out with the Old and Stuffy Nose

It's that time of the year. My daughter goes to bed all clean and healthy after a relaxing bath and wakes up with a stuffy nose, rock-hard buggers and an overall crabby outlook on life. She's not sick (maybe slightly allergic) and there definitel are nights where the mornings are not as stuffy as others. But on the coldest mornings of the winter, the stuffy nose is like a nightmare that she can't stop seeing. What's worse is she hates getting her nose cleaned and can't pick it herself or blow in any way.

Thank goodness there's Sterimar, the only nose spray she's been able to tolerate. Good old sea water! We used to spend the whole summer vacationing by the very salty Aegean and maybe that's why we rarely suffered from stuffy noses this bad. Luckily today, the Aegean comes in the form of a spray that the entire family can use.

Best Books for Toddlers

This list is tried and true. In fact, it's been utilized many many times in many many homes around the world so trust me. Regardless of cultural background or language spoken at home, the stories in these books and the visual feasts they provide are what every toddler looks for in a book. Trust me on that one too.

I'm convinced "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," "The Very Quiet Crickett" and "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" are three board books that are must-haves at all the preschools around the world. There's an unspoken rule that at least one of these books must be studied and performed at least once by at least one preschool in the world at least once a year. I may not be able to prove that statement but I can assure you these three titles by Bill Martin, Jr. and Eric Carle are must-haves for any toddler's library.

Next up is Karen Katz with her "Where is Baby's Belly Button?" and "Where's Baby's Mommy?" followed with Sandra Boynton's "Moo, Baa, La la la," "Pajama Time!" and "The Going-to-Bed Book." You simply can't go wrong with anything written by either of these authors. Our favorite was definitely Pajama Time!

Then there are the true classics such as "Are You My Mother?" by P.D. Eastman and "Goodnight Moon" by Margaret Wise Brown. They are both a must, must, must for the shopping cart.

I'm sure there are many more worn out editions of other classics at each one of your libraries so feel free to post them here.

Blooming Hats

My daughter is 8 now and refuses to wear hats to school. "Don't mess up my haiiiir," she whines every morning as I try to wiggle her into the wool tie-dye hat I've picked up recently. She will take it off as soon as I close the door as she's walking to the school bus. I know because I still peak through the curtain after her as she's running down the sidewalk and meeting up with the bus. I can't help it; she's still my baby! And that baby used to have as big a hat collection as the cute little shoes and Robeez we had stored in the closet (the shoe fetish was mine, the hats she didn't mind.)

Last night I was watching the latest episode of Private Practice online and recognized the cute little hat Naomi's granddaughter was wearing. I knew I had seen something similar recently. Cute little girl's boutique Happy Chickadee never fails me on treasure hunts such as this one. So here's Jamie Rae's peony version, sold in many countries around the world including China! I'm impressed. I guess a girl is a girl is a girl and needs to feel special regardless of what language she speaks, but may no longer dress the way you want her to dress after a certain age. Princesses Aquadraw: Pure Entertainment

I'm shadow-shopping with the mom of an almost three-year old these days and Tomy's Disney Princesses Aquadraw doodle mat was the latest purchase. I very much remember the Aquadoodle phase we went through, so I wasn't surprised when the Aquadraw was the choice of item to be purchased after much browsing. What I didn't expect was the pure joy the said three-year old showed when she got the present. Disney Princesses are still very much alive and kicking, I've decided. I came home and unpacked all the Disney Princess costumes we had packed away now that my daughter is seven. All originals, these gorgeous dresses (I really should say gowns) have held incredibly well over the years, and now need new homes where up-and-coming princesses can enjoy their magic.

Sails Up, Stripes Everywhere

None of us can escape the navy stripes or the sea-faring looks this summer. So if you're going to bring along Mini Me for the ride, make it a special dress from Catimini, one of my favorite European brands.

I have a specific photograph-inspired memory of a similar striped dress from when I was 3, also from Catimini. My long hair was in pigtails in the picture and I must have just learned to ride my tricycle, smiling proudly for the camera. My mom kept the dress for me all these years and passed it on to my daughter when she was two and half. So a Catimini dress can easily last thirty years, if you want it to. But most importantly, a special outfit and a mission accomplished will make a wonderful memory for you and your child one day.

For the past seven years, I've put away all of Maya's "favorites" in storage boxes, hoping, one day, to turn them into a massive quilt of her childhood. Life with a seven year old makes months move much faster, I've decided. Piano lessons, swim practice, movies, parties, neverending playdate sessions (it was so nice when you could just pick up the baby and leave when it was time to go... now I have to negotiate departures.)

We were just talking about bathing suits for girls. How did it get to be holiday season so quickly, I really don't understand. This is what happens when you work two jobs, have your children's schedule to juggle and a home to upkeep. You lose track of time and miss out on the changing colors of the season.

Thankfully it's hard to ignore Christmas and all the relevant holidays surrounding it. Its music, colors, traditions, rituals all beg to get noticed. So we do. We notice. We waver. Do we get a real tree this year or dust off the plastic one in storage? Do we buy new lights, new ornaments, a new star or angel for the top? A new runner perhaps for the dinner table, new candlesticks? New candles from Yankee Candle?

Hopefully the entire process delights and not bores. You get to share the experience with friends and family, the children look forward to decorating the tree, you get to say "Remember when...?" and realize you are making history as you go along. Your history.

I don't care if beach season is over where we live. The sun will be back and when it does I will make sure all the trendy mommies around me know to get one for their toddler. It's been too long. I'm a full-time working mom once again so free time is scarce. I come home at the end of the day and the only thing I want to do is have a glass of chardonnay handed to me while I lift my feet up on the ottoman and settle into an episode of Entourage or Lipstick Jungle.

Having spent the last year as a preschool teacher, I was able to witness many backpack disasters. Bags that are too big, bags that are too small or bags that are just plain ugly. While the first day of school is still at least a month away, I know a few moms who are already searching for this school year's it bag.

I picked a few of my favorites for you. These brands make the best quality backpacks that are all ergonomically appropriate for preschool children; 2-4 year olds barely need to carry anything back and forth from school. At one point during the life of this blog, I promised not to forget about the woman in all of us. I seem to have strayed from that promise recently. The latest issue of one of my favorite magazines reminded me that I deserve to covet things for myself as well.

Not only do I gravitate towards jewelry that has meaning (especially since my daughter was born) but I also simply love enamel's vintage appeal. Most girls love everything butterfly between the ages of two and six. Seven if you're lucky. And you never know at what age a girl is going to be all pants or all dresses -- because it seems like it's one or the other. I think I would have gone with glass the second time around. According to my mother I was a glass bottle baby. When my daughter was born, however, the convenience and portability of plastic won me over. Oh and the fact that EVERYONE was using plastic was another factor of course.

I can't help it. We get sunshine three days in a row coupled with somewhat warm weather and I start packing away the winter clothes and prepare to unleash my inner beach babe. The way certain people look forward to winter so that they can wear their new coat or pair of boots, I look forward to sunshine so I can debut my new collection of flip flops.

My daughter has also caught the bug and won't be seen in anything but flip flops pretty much all summer. This year, we'll be sporting matching Havaianas as well as a few pairs from Old Navy.

Our Favorite Books: The Princess and the Pea

A friend of mine told me yesterday that she thinks there can only be one princess in each household, that if your oldest daughter is the princess the other children who come after her are automatically programmed to be something else. (What? is what scares me but that's a topic for another post for another blog.)

Well, so far, we only have one child in our household and she's far from a princess. Nevertheless, we could not escape the Disney, Barbie, HSM and even HM craziness so in a way she's in fact obsessed with all things princess.

There's one book we come back to over and over again and that princess does not induce ANY kind of guilt in this feminist mother. Lauren Child's The Princess and the Pea is a beautiful addition to any library, whether you're 6 or 36. The classic tale is retold in the most modern and magical way possible with the prince telling his parents: "I would gladly marry tomorrow but…she must be more mesmerizing than the moon and I must find her more fascinating than all the stars in the sky." Lola might have made her famous but Lauren Child's art extends far beyond the popular series and with Polly Borland's contribution, this book really makes her stand apart among children's book illustrators.

It is quiet now but usually, on the weekends, I'm constantly being summoned to look at something, to listen to something, to play with something. When they are home for such an extended period of time without a prescheduled activity, it is hard to keep children entertained and occupied without the guilt.

Board games are a guilt-free and fun alternative to sitting them in front of the television. Add to that a bowl of hummus and a couple of carrot sticks and you have the night made. In fact, you might actually be doing something good for your child's development.

I'm simply crazy about wall stickers. I've always been too lazy to paint the walls but wished for a whimsical room when Maya was born. Removable decals served me so well in her room that I eventually went sticker crazy in my room and the living room as well. Luckily my daughter likes summers as much as I do. I was worried for a while. Having been born in New York, she wished for snow on Christmas and never seemed to get cold the way my Mediterranean blood did. She despised the heavy artillery we had to don each winter in order to weather the brutal winds where we lived, but other than that, she was able to find joy in each of the seasons and didn't show much preference for any of them.

This year, it's different. She really loves the heat and doesn't wish for summer to end. To commemorate, I pulled out this favorite from her bookcase this morning. I was passing by a store window yesterday and came across this gorgeous toddler bed. When I see a piece of art like this one, I immediately want to call my husband and make an appointment for baby #2. I was eleven when I started writing in a diary. Once in a while (usually while packing for a big move) I love going back to those pages of truthful despair -- first BFFs, first fights, the first boyfriend, the first kiss, my parents' divorce. And I truly wish I had recorded the earlier years of grade school as well, for all its simplicity and innocent details.

That's why I started encouraging my daughter to start recording as soon as she could draw somewhat intelligible. Who says a diary has to be filled with words? We fill hers with drawings of her dreams, her favorite places, her favorite people.

Our Favorite DVDs: The Iron Giant

Here's my personal tribute to the Academy Awards for making my Sunday night a little more bearable.

My husband introduced me to The Iron Giant before my daughter was born. At the time, I thought it was a sweet story but didn't really understand its significance.

In the movie, voice talents of Jennifer Aniston and Harry Connick Jr. bring to life a little-known novella by Ted Hughes (of Sylvia Plath fame). The story follows a young boy who finds a giant robot in the woods and decides to take care of him, protect him from the suspicious eyes and ears of a government agent.

What's captivating for me is how the movie captures that special time in a child's life when he is able to make a grown-up decision, in a split-second, and unknowingly accept the grown-up responsibilities and consequences of that decision.

Now seen through the eyes of my five year-old, I realize that The Iron Giant is like the best supporting actress award -- often overlooked as a must-have but nevertheless, a must have perspective in any growing movie library. Oh yes, and it's free of princesses!

As we approach what I hope is Maya's last character-themed birthday party, everything on our daily path is suddenly all Hello Kitty.

I experiment with a lot of beauty products to find just the right "Steal." Somehow a "Splurge" doesn't always feel right, especially after you have kids, so I'm always on the lookout for the latest technology in drugstore prices.

Alas, this is not a beauty roundup of my latest steals. Instead here are a few products on which, I've decided, it's worth spending money. Aside from a Nutella-induced pimple once in a while, these products have allowed my skin and hair to look their best, even during the hormone-crazed post-baby stage.

Rescue

Whether used daily as a conditioner or once a week in a rescue mission, the Kerastese Masquintense cream for thick hair is my secret weapon against frizz. It smells great too and makes my over-dyed, over-styled hair as soft as my daughter's. (She disagrees!)

Cleanse

Somehow the combination of white water lily, senega and barberry makes Estee Lauder's Perfectly Clean Splash Away Foaming Cleanser suitable for all seasons. While my combination skin definitely needs extra hydration during the winter, I can always rely on this cleanser's no-residue rinse and makeup removal abilities.

Hydrate

I first stumbled upon the Pro-Collagen Marine Cream from Elemis at the maker's spa in Coral Gables, Florida. Its smell is infectious. Especially during the winter, there's no other moisturizer for me but this elegant anti-aging miracle. It hydrates without feeling heavy or greasy. In fact, all you can feel is a fragrant cooling -- perfect for the tightness most experience during the harshest weather. Since it lasts more than six months, I find it worth the splurge.

Repair

Speaking of miracles, here's the MVP of the beauty industry, the legendary Night Repair from Estee Lauder. My mom swore by her bottle when I was growing up and used it to the last drop. I didn't really understand what the fuss was about until she offered to test it on my stressed out skin during pregnancy. I've been hooked ever since.

This is the first video link for Trendy Mom (see below). I can't believe I'm actually linking to a Barbie commercial. Nevertheless, Maya is so enamored with this new computer game that I couldn't help but share. It's not for everyone but if you have a budding artist/fashion stylist at home, you definitely want to look into this. Unfortunately, this product was just released at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and is not widely available online yet. I'm hoping you'll be able to snag one at your local Wal-Mart, Target or ToysRUs like we did.

What you get is a compact binder where you can organize a deck of about 50 cards that include 5 dolls and a variety of backgrounds. Each fashion card has a different clothing item -- a top, bottom, dress, shoes and various accessories. You get to dress up your favorite doll with the fashions you choose by layering the cards. The most engaging part of the game is the ability to scan the cards on to your computer with the provided card scan tool that connects via a simple USB port. Once scanned, the fashions become part of a studio environment where your Donna Karan-to-be can get the girls ready for a fashion show, choose a background, music, take photographs and even shoot a video. The game, including the scanning, is so easy to learn that within a few minutes, my almost 5-year-old only needed me when she wanted me to watch her shows.

I adopted strict principles in shopping for toys this past year. What works for our family is:

A toy has to be made of high quality materials. If not renewable, at least I want them to last through several kids.

LittleMissMatched claims to be changing the world one sock at a time. For me it was six socks and a pair of tights last week when I walked past its colorful booth at the annual Grand Central Terminal gift fair in New York City.

I came home with two packs of three socks each -- none of them matched. Each leg of the pair of tights I picked out didn't match either. I knew what Maya would say. "These don't match!" -- it's what she's been saying about anything I pick out for her to wear since she turned three years old.

"But they go!" I said as she pulled on the knee-highs to try them out with her new red patent leather boots. When she lifted her head up, there was a huge smile on her face. She hasn't taken them off since!

I have to admit: some of my readers may take offense to this book. I know a few friends do. In fact, the other "F" word is such a big taboo in some homes that they have come up with elaborate replacements: "sound" and "poopsie" are some of the favorites.

In my home, a fart is a fart is a fart. So when I came across the Fartsy Claus by Mitch Chivus, I knew I had to have it. As I expected her to, my daughter cracked up on every page and has asked me to read it every night ever since that first time. Luckily there are only 28 more days left 'til Christmas!

Mike Reed's full-of-attitude illustrations add to the charm of the book for the preschool set. In fact, this is one of those rare books that will truly delight all children between the ages of 3 and 7. Get Baby on Schedule with Baby Daze

Baby Daze is by far the best organizer for baby's first months at home.

Call it the neuroses of a Virgo or the perfectly normal anxieties of a new mom, I remember going a little nuts around the time my maternity leave was over and I had to go back to work. I had kept careful records of Maya's eating, sleeping and pooping schedules and was finally beginning to feel in control. I soon realized that my whole world would be turned upside down with the arrival of her nanny.

So I wrote a six-page, single-spaced letter describing Maya's schedule and how-perfectly-so I liked (or actually she liked) everything and expected our babysitter to continue to jot down every little burp, sneeze and poop in my Baby Daze organizer.

After work, I took pleasure in knowing exactly what Maya did that day and added my own little entries for the rest of the night, trying to maintain a sense of control over my household -- which I now know to be a futile attempt. Soon after, we stopped writing of course. However the cute little binder will always be treasured as a reminder of how overwhelming parenthood felt during those first few months of her life.

They're never too young for poems. In fact soon after I started reading short Shel Silverstein poems to Maya, she was pretending to be writing poems herself, trying to rhyme the words, making up new ones, sounding out sections after she scribble-scrabbled in her "poem book."

Littlest Backpacks for the Littlest Ones

My friend's youngest started preschool yesterday. As we expected, there was a lot of crying, clinging, lots and lots of tears. We've all been through it or will go through it! Somehow, regardless of how many kids you raised through this stage in the past, it doesn't get any easier when your "baby" is begging for "mama" and you have to leave him there.

It turns out this little guy may just feel better about the whole school thing if only he had a backpack like his big sister. "How cute!" I thought when I heard the story.

Unfortunately there aren't that many cute little guy backpacks out there if you choose to avoid the famous train gang or a particular red monster. How about a friendly lion instead? Or a froggy, ladybug and maybe even a monkey?

We traveled across the Atlantic Ocean only to find one of my favorite toddler must-haves being used all over the city in Istanbul. Say hello to the ultimate portable potty from Kalencom Potette.

This tiny little thing was a park stable when Maya first got rid of the diaper. Perfect for emergencies, it folded very small and went with us everywhere. Even during times when we didn't have enough of the disposable liner bags, it worked perfectly with just a plastic bag and a few paper towels.

Unless you like running around looking for a bathroom with a leaky toddler, do yourself a favor and throw one in the trunk or under the stroller. You'll be glad you did!

On Vacation But Still Scouting

Almost a week ago, Maya and I boarded an airplane for a ten hour international flight. We're on vacation but continue to scout for the cutest outfits, smartest toys, greatest travel tips.
